Symptoms Thrush Men

Thrush is also known as candida yeast infection and candidiasis.  Thrush in men is not as common as in women but can still be a problem and at the very least an irritation and also a possible embarrassing condition.  If left untreated the male yeast infection will persist into the long term and possibly spread and become more severe.  Finding a treatment that works permanently is therefore important and should be sought sooner rather than later.

So what are the symptoms of thrush in men?  They are both visual and sensual, meaning you can see them and feel them.

Inflammation and itching skin on and around the penis and general genital area are most common.  The itching can become quite severe and extremely uncomfortable especially if left untreated.  As well as the discomfort there is also the discolored inflamed skin which is unpleasant to look at not to mention the possibility of embarrassment as well.

The following are some other symptomatic signs of thrush in mean men:

  • Pain and discomfort with possible ‘burning’ during urination and / or sex.
  • Skin color around the penis turning red.
  • Irritation of the skin such as itching
  • Yellow or white substance being discharged from the penis

There is also the possibility of smell associated with the symptoms especially if there are accumulations of ‘cottage cheesy’ material on the penis, usually under the foreskin.

Thrush in men is the result of the increase in amount of the naturally occurring fungus candida albicans in the body.  In the body is functioning properly and the body chemistry and blood sugar levels are in balance then the amount of candida is regulated and there is not a problem. It is when there is a shift or change to the balance that a problem can occur with a multiplication in the amount of candida present and a yeast infection is the result.

The infection in men tends to concentrate in warm moist areas of the body such as the mouth (oral thrush) and the genitalia (penis yeast infection) and men with a foreskin are more likely to get the condition due to the warmer moist conditions underneath.

Contrary to what some people think and believe thrush in men is not usually sexually transmitted and is actually more prevalent in men who are not sexually active.

A key question to consider is what is actually the underlying cause of the shift in body chemistry causing the candida yeast grow and proliferate.  There is usually more than one reason.  Check out the yeast infections causes page to learn more.
