Over the Counter Ointments to Help Vaginal Yeast Infections

It wasn’t that many years ago, that treatment for yeast infections had to be prescribed through a physician. That meant waiting for an appointment before you could begin to cure the infection. If you have ever had a yeast infection you can fully understand how difficult waiting for the relief can be.

Thank goodness those days are behind us. We can now gain access to relief of a yeast infection, as soon as we know it is there. Many products have become available over the counter and as with any sort of treatment; different people will react individually to its effects. Sometimes it takes more than one try to find which works best for you.

What are the signs of a yeast infection?

  • Vaginal discharge, which may look like cottage cheese
  • Swelling of the vagina or vulva
  • Itching and burning in the area around the vagina
  • Discomfort during sex

Most women in their lifetime will experience at least one yeast infection. This condition is caused by a fungus which is called Candida Albicans. As is characteristic of fungi, if left untreated it will continue to grow and become more problematic. If you have never had a yeast infection before and you experience the above symptoms, it is best to see a gynecologist, to make sure that is it a yeast infection and not something else which might mimic the symptoms.

If you have had yeast infection before, you probably know when you are experiencing one, even before it becomes full blown. So what over the counter ointments to help vaginal yeast infections are available to you for this annoying condition?

Anti-fungal creams:

  • Miconazole: This is the generic name of the anti-fungal ointment that is found in the Monistat creams as well as Femizole-M. Miconazole products are used most frequently to treat the common Candida yeast infections. They offer relief of the uncomfortable symptoms that are inherent in yeast infections. You can find them in treatment packages ranging from a one day does to a 7 day dose, often it will still require a full 7 days to feel completely better even if you use the 1 or 3 day dose. The main difference is you will take it fewer times and wait for the full effect to take place.
  • Tioconazole:  This is the generic of Vagistat 1 and it is an anti-fungal that works best on monilia yeast infections. Only one dose is needed and it must be inserted into the vagina before bedtime with the use of the application plunger.
  • Butoconazole: This is the generic name for products such as Femstat. Gynazole 1, Myselex 3. This vaginal cream can be bought in 1-3 day doses.
  • Clotrimzaole:  Generic of brands Gyne-lotrimin, Bynix, Mycelex ointments and Trivagizole. This product comes in both vaginal ointments and tablets to treat yeast infections. It is also found in Clotrimzaole products. If after 3 days using Clotrimzaole you are not feeling any relief please contact your doctor. Do not use them for more than one week or if you are pregnant.

Vaginal yeast infections are easy to cure, once the correct treatment is found. It is extremely important to let your doctor know if you are pregnant, because there are specific medications for yeast infections that can be used and others that cannot. Relief is close so do not despair. The medications for yeast infections tend to do the job with few side effects. Just remember, if you are not 100% sure that you have a yeast infection; call your doctor before using any products. Once treatment has begun, you will feel the positive results quickly.
