How to Cure Thrush

As you probably know already thrush is also referred to as a yeast infection, candida and candidiasis.  If you want to, you can learn in more detail about what a yeast infection is by clicking  here.  When you understand more about the condition and how it was actually caused then naturally you are going to be very determined to get rid of it for good.  The biggest questions for most people is how do you treat thrush and can it be cured permanently?

Choosing the Right Cure for your Thrush Condition

What are the possibilities for someone looking to cure thrush and what is the so called right cure?  One of the first things to consider is whether to try a conventional medical treatment or whether to go for a more natural thrush cure without using over the counter medicines or prescribed drugs.

Conventional Treatments

Using conventional drugs may work for some although it’s worth considering that they may cause side effects such as duplicating the very symptoms (e.g. burning sensation, skin irritation and itching) they are trying to alleviate.  Because thrush is a fungal overgrowth the drugs used to treat the yeast infection are anti-fungal drugs.  They are available in 3 distinct forms of application:

1.  Creams: to rub either onto the infected area externally (e.g. vulva, skin) or in some cases internally (e.g. vagina)

2. Pessaries: to use internally for use in vaginal thrush/yeast infection

3: Capsules: to be swallowed for medication

The first 2 (creams and pessaries) work directly on the infected area and are often used simultaneously to alleviate both the internal and external symptoms.  It should be noted that both have the potential to be quite messy and can leak out of the vagina.   There are both vaginal creams for internal use and vulval cream for use externally.  The pessaries and vaginal creams are inserted high into the vagina by using either an applicator or a finger.  Due to the potential seepage from the vagina (onto pants/underwear) some women choose to insert the creams and pessaries at night before going to bed.

Like with most treatments it is important to complete the recommended length of time and for creams and pessaries it can be up to 2 weeks.

Taking capsules is the preferred choice of some thrush patients perhaps because they are relatively easy to take and less of a mess.  The potential side effects however are potentially quite numerous and include dizziness and nausea, skin irritations and rash, upset tummy and stomach ache, diarrhoea).

Note that if you are pregnant have thrush/yeast infection certain medications may not be possible due to your condition so read and understand the instructions and/or consult a suitably qualified professional.

How to Cure Thrush Naturally

Many people prefer to avoid drug treatments for various reasons.  Perhaps to avoid the unpleasant side effects or because they seem unnatural and want to keep their body free from chemicals.  It may also be because they have tried conventional treatments and that the drugs haven’t worked or that the thrush has been recurrent.

There are a range of natural treatments for thrush/yeast infection:

Natural Treatment 1 – Tea Tree Oil: Tea Tree oil is a natural antiseptic and has antifungal properties as well so it stands to reason that it has some success in lessening the symptoms of yeast infections and thrush. A moderate amount of tea tree oil can be added to some cotton wool or similar and then applied to the infected area.  For vaginal yeast infection the tea tree oil can also be added onto a tampon and then inserted into the vagina (changing it twice a day) to offer some relief.

Natural Treatment 2 – Yogurt: Similar to tea tree oil above, yogurt can also have a beneficial remedial effect on thrush and for vaginal infections again it is the technique of adding yogurt to a tampon and inserting it into the vagina(changing it twice a day).  If  the symptoms are eliminated then continue with this remedy for another day anyway for extra effect.

Natural Treatment 3 – Garlic (note: not for vaginal remedy): Garlic is also well known for its natural medicinal and therapeutic properties.  The technique here is to simply puree the garlic into a paste and apply it directly onto the infected area.

It is important to recognise that the 3 natural treatments above are just that – treatments.  Whilst they may help alleviate the  discomfort and symptoms, there can be no guarantee that they will work as a permanent cure.
